Weight loss surgery was first developed in the 1960s. Weight loss surgeries are performed when a person is considered obese, and results in patients losing weight at a more rapid pace than with traditional dieting and other weight loss methods. The surgery restricts the amount of food that is able to be consumed.
Various weight loss surgeries exist, such as the gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding. These surgeries may be performed on an outpatient or inpatient basis and may take place in a hospital setting or in a surgery center.
