Bariatric Surgery is defined as, relating to or specializing in the treatment of obesity. The root of the word, baros, means 'weight' in Greek, iatr means 'treatment' and ic means 'related to'.

Bariatric surgery is performed on those who are considered obese. Various forms of bariatric surgery exist, such as the gastric sleeve and gastric bypass. Bariatric surgery is performed on the stomach and/or intestines and allows an obese person to lose weight, often at a more rapid rate than with traditional weight loss methods. This type of surgery was discovered in the 1960s.
